Silicone Rubber

Silicone rubber is odorless, tasteless and non-toxic. Silicone rubbers are superior in heat resistance, electric insulation, and chemical stability compared to ordinary organic rubbers. It has been widely used to replace petrochemical products in all industries including aerospace, munitions industry, automobile, fine chemicals, construction, electric and electronics, food processing, mechanical engineering, medical and pharmaceutical, cosmetics, home appliances, paper film, solar batteries, and semi conductor. Recently, the scope of silicone application has been expanding at a greater speed.

There are three main industrial classifications of silicone rubbers:

Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) – Usually come as a flowable liquid and are used for sealants, mould making, encapsulation and potting. These materials are not generally used as conventional rubbers.
RTV silicone rubbers use two different types of silicone chemistry to form an elastomer: Condensation cure systems which use a tin based catalyst and addition cure systems which use platinum based catalyst.  Although the end products can be very similar they do have some key differences which should always be considered when making your product selection.

Liquid Silicone Rubbers (LSR) – Sometimes called heat curable liquid materials, these materials are processed on specially designed injection moulding and extrusion production equipment.
These are essentially two-part systems, supplied deaerated ready for use often in premetered equipment. Low injection pressures and low pressure forming techniques are sufficient.
Physical properties are comparable to general purpose grades and high strength peroxide cured elastomers. Furthermore, they exhibit self-extinguishing properties.

High Temperature Vulcanizing (HTV) – Sometimes called heat curable, these are usually in a semi-solid gum form in the uncured state. They require rubber-type processing to produce finished items.

However the silicone rubber is usually divided into two types from its characters, which are RTV silicone rubber and HTV silicone rubber.
